Wire EDM, often referred to as WEDM, is a way of machining which is executed by using a thin wire that can easily cut in any X,Y,U,V direction. EDM is an acronym for “electric discharge machining.” This method of machining effectively cuts all types of material that conduct electrical current, whether it is a hard or soft material. The thing that makes this significant is the fact that wire EDM will cut without making contact, and results in a burr-free finish. The wire that is used is rather fine, thereby making it possible for very small slots or small radius cuts on corners.
The wire in no way touches the piece being cut, and because of this fact, there won’t be any cutting forces. Therefore it is easy to cut exceptionally thin stock and make extremely precise cuts without causing damage. Wire EDM has been around the business for roughly half a century now in various forms.
